Goliath Stick Insect (Eurycnema goliath), Iluka Rainforest Walk, Iluka, north coast of New South Wales, Australia.
Occasionally, when travelling Australia you come across an absolute gem of a place, a naturalists dream. With a little time to spare whilst travelling on the north coast of NSW we decided to drop into Iluka, purely on the basis that the name of the town sounded ‘interesting’. We decided to jump right in and do the Iluka Rainforest Walk, a short 2.5km walk through a World Heritage listed rainforest. The reserve is listed because it’s the largest remnant of seaside (littoral) rainforest in NSW. The walk was truly astonishing. Most notably because half way through the walk we stumbled upon a Goliath Stick Insect (Eurycnema goliath). I never imagined I’d ever see one in the wild and to be honest the only reason we spotted it was because it was hanging off overhanging branch that we had to walk around. Usually they are masters of camouflage, going almost unnoticed in rainforest foliage. This is just as well because a female of this size would make the best meal for a rainforest bird or reptile. The first instar (or develop stage) of this stick insect is similar to a small brown ant, helping it to remain inconspicuous in the foliage. The walk was over quickly but l’m sure we’ll be back. It was just one of those days that you truly remember for the rest of your life.
Steam on the North Coast, NSW.
The North Coast line connects Sydney with Brisbane ( 613 miles) and just under 500 miles of this is single track.
This was the first route in NSW to be become all diesel ( with a few small exception such as two oil burning shunters and seasonal sugar traffic on a one of the two branch lines.)
So for for thirty years it was very rare to see steam on the scenic North Coast.
However there were extensive operations of preserved steam locomotives in 1988.
